Guitar setup diagnostic: fret buzz, action, intonation

Describe a mechanical symptom — buzzing, tuning trouble, action, intonation — and get a triage: most likely causes, one thing to try first, and when to see a real tech.

Describing a symptom so the triage is useful

The diagnostic works from what you write, so the detail you give is the detail you get back. Name the string, where on the neck it happens, and when: open or fretted, only when you dig in, only since the guitar moved to a different room. Choose the instrument type if you know it. You have up to 500 characters, and a sentence or two is usually enough.

Each answer comes in three parts: the most likely causes, one check to try first, and a stop line for when the job belongs with a guitar tech. Do that check before you reach for a screwdriver or the truss rod. If the symptom is too vague to call, the Try first part says what detail would help instead of guessing. For intonation complaints, check each string at the 12th fret with the tuner before you describe it, so you can say which strings read sharp or flat.

The care journal above keeps a simple record in this browser for each guitar you add: its name, tuning, string age, and quick check-ins such as a buzz scan or a finished restring. Log a setup baseline while the guitar plays well, so that when it starts to feel off you have a point to compare against.
