The note name, string, and fret remain visible after every selection, so sound is never the only feedback.
Standard guitar uses plucked-string synthesis in E A D G B E tuning. Electric synth uses a bright oscillator voice. Bass synth uses a darker oscillator voice on a four-string E A D G neck.
All three voices run through the Web Audio API. No samples or amplifier models are loaded.
The readout names the exact note and octave after every selection, which makes the virtual guitar a quick way to check what you think you know about the fretboard. Say the note out loud before you choose a fret, then look at the readout to see whether you were right.
Pick one note name, say C, and find every C from the open strings up to the 12th fret on all six strings. Then compare the octave numbers. Positions that show the same octave are the same pitch in different places, which is where your fingering choices come from: the 5th fret of the low E string and the open A string both read A2. Do one note name per session until you can find each one without hunting.
Switch to the bass synth and the neck drops to four strings tuned E A D G, so the same exercise carries over if you play bass. Once the guessing stops, the fretboard trainer is the place to keep drilling note names.
