Getting a tuning that holds
The tuner names whichever note is closest to what you play, so it follows alternate tunings as well as standard. The needle runs from 50 cents flat to 50 cents sharp, and the note turns amber once you are within 5 cents. For finer work, switch to Strobe: the band drifts right when you are sharp, left when you are flat, and stands still when you are there. Pitch detection runs in your browser, and the audio stays on your device.
Always tune up to the note. If a string reads sharp, drop it below the target and bring it back up, so there is no slack left in the tuning peg to slip mid-song. Pluck with the same weight you use when playing, and read the display once the first attack settles, since a hard pick reads a little sharp for a moment.
After new strings or a setup change, run one more check: tune all six strings, then play the fretted note at the 12th fret on each one. If it reads more than a few cents away from the open string, the intonation needs attention, and the bench diagnostic can help you work out why.
