How to build speed with the click

Drag the slider anywhere from 30 to 280 BPM, then use the minus and plus buttons to move one beat per minute at a time. To match a recording, press Tap along with it: the tempo is averaged from your last few taps, and a pause of more than two seconds starts a fresh count. Pick 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 or 6/4 and the first beat of each bar clicks higher than the rest, so you always know where the one is.

For a passage that falls apart at full speed, climb a ladder. Find the tempo where you can play it cleanly three times in a row, drop 10 BPM below that, and play three more clean passes. Then go up 2 to 4 BPM at a time, moving on only after three clean passes. When a step breaks down, go back two steps instead of grinding at the edge.

When the top of the ladder feels solid, halve the BPM and hear each click as beats two and four. The gaps get wider, so rushing and dragging show up fast. If you would rather not manage the climb by hand, the speed trainer ramps from your practice tempo to a target tempo for you.
