FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Strumly: pricing, the AI coach, microphone privacy, skill levels, and how it compares to lessons.

Last updated

Is Strumly free?

Right now, yes — during early access every tool is unlocked free, and the coach's free tier (3 sessions a month) is active. The planned pricing afterward: tuner free forever, a one-time $5.99 week pass for the full toolkit, and $19.99/month Pro for unlimited coaching. Full details in Account & billing.

Do I need to create an account?

Only for the coach. Every other tool — tuner, metronome, chords, scales, ear trainer, looper, and the rest — works with no sign-up. See what needs an account.

Does Strumly listen to me through my microphone?

Only when you use a microphone tool (tuner, chord drills, play-along), only after your browser asks for permission, and the analysis happens locally in your browser. Raw audio is not uploaded or recorded — for drills, only the resulting scores (success rate, timing offsets) are saved. Details in How the AI coach works.

What skill level is Strumly for?

The coach adapts to whatever level you tell it. The product is strongest for players past the absolute-beginner stage who have a specific thing to fix — a chord change, timing, fretboard knowledge. Brand-new players should start with the learning path and the free lessons, which assume nothing.

Can the AI coach replace a human guitar teacher?

For some things yes, for some things no, and we've written the honest version at length: AI guitar coach vs. human teacher. Short version: the AI wins on availability, memory, patience, and measurable drills; a human wins on watching your hands, hearing your tone, and correcting physical technique.

What does a coaching session actually do?

You tell the coach what you're working on, it runs you through scored drills, reacts to your actual numbers, and writes a summary plus a next-session focus when you're done. The full lifecycle is documented in Practice sessions.

What counts as one of my 3 free sessions?

Your first real message in a conversation starts a session. Everything inside that conversation — drills, questions, plans — is then unlimited. The greeting doesn't count, drill results don't count, and a failed response doesn't count. The cap resets each month.

Does the coach work with electric and acoustic guitars?

Yes. The chord detection works from pitch content, so acoustic, electric (clean), and electro-acoustic all score fine. Heavy distortion smears the signal the detector needs — use a cleaner tone for drills.

Is there an iOS app?

Yes — Suede Guitar Studio on the App Store. The web app also works in mobile browsers.

Can AI agents use Strumly?

Yes. The Agent API is a pay-per-call music API for AI agents (x402 on Base, or Stripe), covering coach queries, song analysis, chord-progression transcription, and practice plans. Agents get 5 free calls a day.

Who builds Strumly?

Suede Labs AI, founded by Jason Colapietro. Strumly is part of Suede's family of tools for musicians. More on the about page.

Something's broken — where do I look?

Troubleshooting covers the common cases (microphone permission, tuner detection, drill scoring, sign-in loops). If that doesn't fix it, contact us.
